Where Is Siesta Key? Facts and Local Information
It was time for us to decide where to go in our next Florida vacation and I knew it is going to be Siesta Key. I heard a lot about that place over the years (especially the beaches, like everyone else). So I decided to dive into the research and check everything I can about this amazing and unique place.
Where is Siesta Key?
Nestled on the sun-kissed Gulf Coast of Florida lies Siesta Key, a barrier island that is as captivating as the turquoise waters that lap its shores. More than just another tropical paradise, Siesta Key is an amalgamation of pristine sandy beaches, a laid-back vibe, and a rich tapestry of culture and nature.
Geographically, Siesta Key spans a modest eight miles but offers an expanse of experiences that defy its size. Separated from the mainland by the Roberts Bay and Little Sarasota Bay, the island is easily accessible via two bridges, acting as gateways to this sun-drenched haven.

The history of Siesta Key is as textured as its sands. From its early inhabitants – the Calusa Indians – to Spanish explorers and eventual settlement by adventurous pioneers, every era has left an indelible mark on the island. How to Get to Siesta Key
Navigating your way to the sun-kissed shores of Siesta Key is part of the adventure. Obviously, the method you choose, depends on where you are.
Since we were coming from Baltimore, driving there (which takes around 16 hours), was out of the question so we decided to go with flying.
Getting to Siesta Key by Air
For those traveling from afar, air travel is the most efficient way to get close to Siesta Key. While Siesta Key doesn’t have its own airport, it’s conveniently serviced by several nearby options:
- Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport (SRQ): Located just about 10 miles from Siesta Key, SRQ is the closest airport. It welcomes numerous domestic flights and some international ones. This is where we landed for our Siesta Key vacation. From there, we rented a car.
- Tampa International Airport (TPA): A larger hub, about 70 miles north of Siesta Key, TPA serves many airlines and offers a broader range of flight options. Renting a car from Tampa or using shuttle services can get you to Siesta Key in roughly 1 to 1.5 hours.
- Other Nearby Airports: St. Petersburg-Clearwater International Airport and Punta Gorda Airport are also within driving distance, providing additional options for travelers.
Getting There by Car
For those who love the thrill of a road trip or are coming from neighboring regions, driving to Siesta Key is a scenic journey worth undertaking.
- From the North (e.g., Tampa): Take the I-75 South and exit at University Parkway (Exit 213). Head west on University Parkway until you reach the Tamiami Trail (US 41). Turn right onto US 41 South, and after a few miles, turn left onto Stickney Point Road which will lead you over the bridge and onto Siesta Key.
- From the South (e.g., Naples): Use the I-75 North and take the Clark Road exit (Exit 205). Go west on Clark Road which will directly lead you over the bridge to Siesta Key.
- Parking on Siesta Key: Once on the island, there are several public parking lots near the major beaches. However, it’s worth noting that parking can fill up quickly, especially during peak seasons. Consider arriving early or using alternate modes of transport like bikes or trolleys once on the island.
Whether by air or by land, the journey to Siesta Key sets the tone for the idyllic experiences that await. The vistas, the bridges overlooking expansive bays, and the anticipation of touching that soft, white sand – it all starts the moment you decide to head this way.
Weather in Siesta Key
This shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone but Florida is HOT! We were there for winter break and it was still very hot with temperature going up to above 80!
